

Services for Charles “Charlie” Ray Mettlen, Sr., 75, of Diboll, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2017 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Vic Bass officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Grove Cemetery in Diboll.
Mr. Mettlen was born May 20, 1942 in Wells, Texas, the son of the late Virgie (Shoemaker) and Charlie T. Mettlen. He passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017 in Diboll.
In loving and cherished memory of Charles “Charlie” R. Mettlen, Sr., who will be remembered and thought of often as the Best of the Best Husband, Father (Daddy), Papa, Uncle and Brother. Also, the best church music leader, Sunday school teacher, yellow truck builder and ice cream eater. His greatest legacy is his 55-year marriage to his wife and the examples of pure love he never hesitated to show to his family and special friends. Charles, “Charlie”, retired from Temple Inland after 33 years of loyal service. He served as music director and adult Sunday school teacher at local churches for greater than 40 years. He led worship services at Trinity Mission for numerous years.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda Thompson Mettlen; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Ray Jr. and Michele; daughter-in-law, Janie Mettlen; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Melissa; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Richard Wagner; grandchildren, Meagan, Sara, Kristin, Erica, Jim, Cory, Hollie, Ashlyn, Ashlee and Kayli; great-grandchildren, Skyler Jackson and Camryn Mettlen; brother and his wife, J. W. Mettlen and Christine; sister and her husband, Elizabeth and Roland Brock; and brother, Carl A. Mettlen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie T. and Virgie Mettlen; son, Eric D. Mettlen; and granddaughter, Jennifer Mettlen.
Pallbearers will be Alton Thompson, Luis Maldonado, Mark Jeffrey, Alvin Fasske, Travis Thorne and Marshall McLain.
Honorary pallbearer will be Ed Terrell.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
Special appreciation is given to his nieces, Darlene Thorne, Jennifer McLain and sister-in-law, Linda Fondren for their wonderful, loving care.
