

Funeral services for Ennis William Tomez, 79, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2015 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Loyd Thurman, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mr. Tomez was born on July 21, 1935 in Nacogdoches County, Texas, the son of the late Frank and Mary Jane Tamez. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at The Joseph House with his family surrounding him.
Mr. Tomez resided in Lufkin his entire life and was an active deacon and board member at Victory Assembly of God. He served on the board of Oak Grove Assembly of God and Victory Assembly of God for over 50 years. He led a Christ centered life with the utmost of integrity leaving a lasting impression on all. He retired from the paper mill as tour foreman, where he worked for 39 years. His kindness, leadership and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, taking care of his land, poetry, and the ability to make anyone laugh. Mr. Tomez was a devoted husband to Bernice Tomez for 61 years and a proud father to Rita, Catherine and Beverly. He was actively involved in the lives of all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Bernice Tomez of Lufkin; daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and John Horton and Beverly and Mike Shurley, all of Lufkin; grandchildren include Jason and Karen Horton of Lufkin, Brandi Gonzalez of Evanston, Wyoming, Ashley and Seth Marcantel of Lafayette, Louisiana, Lynsi and Cory Denman, Zachary and Jade Pouland and Haley Shurley, all of Lufkin, and Hanna Shurley of College Station; great-grandchildren include Alli and Aron Gonzalez, Cody and Cason Horton, Madix Denman, Bentley and Chloe Pouland all of Lufkin and Truman Ennis Marcantel of Lafayette, Louisiana; brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Margie Tomez, Pat and Ann Tomez, all of Lufkin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Jo Bob Neal of Lufkin and Ruby and Pete Johnson of Waskom, Texas, along with a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Janie Neal, Mary Josephine (Betty) Johnson, and Judy Tomez; beloved daughter, Catherine Tomez; and granddaughter, Tamesha Horton.
Pallbearers will be Jason Horton, Zachary Pouland, Cody Horton, Aron Gonzalez, Cory Denman and Seth Marcantel.
The family would like to thank Hospice in the Pines and The Joseph House for the extraordinary care, love and support given during his final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Tomez’s memory may be made to The Joseph House, 5783 FM 841, Lufkin, TX 75901.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
