Garvis A. "Gob" Whitehead

Services for Garvis A. "Gob" Whitehead, 88, of Etoile, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2013 at Etoile United Pentecostal Church with Bro. Glenn D. Morton officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Springs Cemetery in Etoile.

Mr. Whitehead was born September 29, 1924 in San Augustine County, Texas, the son of the late Martha "Matt" (Bobbitt) and Richard Whitehead. He passed away January 29, 2013 in a local hospital.

Mr. Whitehead worked in the oil fields in the 1950s until he suffered a brain injury in an accident. After that time, he ran a bait shop, chicken farmed, worked as a flagman for the Texas Highway Department, and other self-employment endeavors.

He loved his pets. One of his last voiced concerns was whether his pets: two horses, a dog and a cat, were being cared for. There was no place he loved more than being in Etoile surrounded by all his friends. He will be sorely missed by all, especially those who regularly saw him on the bench at Lowery's Grocery in Etoile. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors include two sisters, Avell Patterson of Nacogdoches and Odessa Burnaman of Garland; one brother, Ben Whitehead of Etoile; a host of nieces and nephews he loved dearly; and many, many special friends.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Fannie (Cryer) Whitehead in July 2000; brother, Ireland Whitehead; infant brother, Eddie Merle Whitehead; two sisters-in-law, Nell and Rachel; one brother-in-law, Herbert; special nephew, Benton; and niece, Benya.

Pallbearers will be John Mark Patterson, Richard Whitehead, Michael Whitehead, Hunter Whitehead, Neil Cook and James Norwood.

Mr. Whitehead's family wishes to thank all the people who so faithfully looked out for him, making it possible for him to live at his home up until the last two weeks, which he spent in the good care of Huntington Healthcare and Rehabilitation.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Friday at Etoile United Pentecostal Church prior to the service .
