

Graveside services for George Wayne Garrett, 87, of Lufkin, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 1, 2012 in the Calvary Cemetery in Trinity County with The Reverend Father Preston Weatherly officiating.
Mr. Garrett was born August 8, 1925 in Lufkin, Texas, the son of the late Stella (Barber) and Wayne L. Garrett. He passed away Sunday, November 25, 2012 in a local nursing facility.
Mr. Garrett was a graduate of Lufkin High School. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a customer service representative and mail sorter for approximately 35 years before retiring. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
George Wayne served with the United States Navy during World War II and spent more than 18 months of sea duty on the USS Banner and the USS Clermont. He was present at the battle of Leyte Gulf and while on Iwo Jima watched when the Marines raised the American flag. He attained the rank of Seaman First Class and an Honorable Discharge at the close of the war.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Charles L. and Dr. Eleanor Paxton (Smith) Garrett of Garland; nephew, Charles L. Garrett, Jr.; niece and her husband, Deirdre Hasselbach and Timothy of Albuquerque; nephew and his wife, Vaughan L. Garrett and Angela of Rowlett and their children, David and Sydney Garrett; niece, DeJee Garrett of Lufkin; nephew, Patrick Garrett of Lufkin; cousins, Beverlye Tafolla and Father Preston Weatherly; and a number of other family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, George Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Garrett in 1979; brother, Donald Bert Garrett; and cousin, Anita Lively Williams.
