

Services for Janice Waneta Astley Karns, 92, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2015 in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 5205 S. First Street, in the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel, with Reverend Stephen Lantis officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mrs. Karns was born April 21, 1923, to Hazel Faye (Crispin) and Albert Edward Astley in Des Moines, Iowa. She passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2015 at Pinecrest Retirement Community.
She was the middle child, with an older sister Dorothy and younger brother Albert. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1941 and married Charles William Karns (1922-2000) on July 3, 1942. There were two children of this marriage, Charles William Karns, Jr., (1943-1993) and Nancy Jane Karns Duncan, currently living in Baytown, Texas. Janice lived in Marshalltown, Iowa from 1946 to 1965. After 1965, she also lived in McKinney, Texas, Sherman, Texas, Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana before retirement to Lufkin. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Lufkin, Texas and enjoyed their Bible study classes.
She leaves behind her daughter Nancy Duncan and son-in-law, David Duncan; grandsons, Brad Duncan and Jason Karns and his wife Allison Karns; two great-granddaughters, Gracey Duncan and Lyla Rose Duncan. Her sweetness and kindness will be missed by all that knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Karns’ memory may be made to the MRC Pinecrest Benevolent Care Funding or the MRC Pinecrest Employee Appreciation Funds, 1302 Tom Temple Drive, Lufkin, TX 75904; or to First Christian Church, 1300 S. First Street, Lufkin, TX 75901.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time Thursday at the Elwyn M. Gipson Memorial Chapel.
