Mary Birmingham Mead Byrd

She was born December 21, 1918 to Roy and Myrtle Mead. A longtime Tulsan, she attended Monte Cassino School, Smith College, University of Tulsa, and University of Oklahoma, where she received her Master of Library Science degree. She served as a Librarian at Tulsa University from 1972 – 1982, when she married Joe Byrd III, and moved to Lufkin, TX. She was a member of the Junior League in Tulsa, Pittsburgh, PA and Lufkin.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Joseph P. Byrd III and Frank W. Birmingham; brother, Roy Mead, Jr. and sister-in-law, Mary Mead. She is survived by her children, Michael Birmingham (Mary Ann) of Eugene, OR, Mary Birmingham (Carole Deatherage) of Tucson, AZ, Peter Birmingham of Houston; granddaughters, Catherine Birmingham of San Francisco, CA, Sara Birmingham of Portland, OR; and the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the Byrd family.

Friends describe Mary as fun, elegant, kind and generous, as good a combination as one can get.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 8, 2013 at 3:00 pm in the Henderson Chapel at First United Methodist Church in Lufkin, TX. She will be laid to rest in Tulsa, OK at the Rose Hill Mausoleum on Wednesday, July 10, 2013.
