

Services for Troy Alton McCarty, 90, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 27, 2016 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Horace Fletcher. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Wells.
Troy was born August 16, 1926 in Cherokee County, the son of the late Maudell Bailey McCarty and William Earnest McCarty. He passed away Monday, October 24, 2016.
Troy grew up near Wells, Texas and attended school in Wells. He then served in the United Stated Army from 1945 – 1946 in World War II in Okinawa. After the end of the war, he was transferred to Seoul, Korea to finish his term as a sergeant and a member of the fire department. When he came home from the service, he went to work as a logging contractor for Southern Pine Lumber Company-Temple of Diboll. He then married his wife, Bonnie Herman, in 1956. They moved to Lufkin where they lived since then. He continued working for Temple through several name changes. He retired after 34 years of service with them. Troy was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He loved his family and enjoyed fishing and farming.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bonnie McCarty of Lufkin; sons and daughters-in-law, Lane and Cindy McCarty of Tomball and Troy and Mary McCarty; son-in-law, Jim Smith of Lufkin; daughter, Paula Sones of Lufkin; grandchildren, Shana Glawson and husband Starlan of Lufkin, Justin Looney and wife Rachel of Oklahoma, Cynthia McCarty and Matthew McCarty of Tomball, Asa and Foryst McCarty; step-grandchildren, Jessica and B. J. Scholfield of Idaho and Jack Smith of Lufkin; great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Kaylie Looney, Carlie and Camryn Glawson; step-great-grandchildren, Collin Smith and Jackson Scholfield; sister-in-law, Jannie Herman of Wells.
In addition to his parents, Troy was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy McCarty Smith; 4 sisters, Loretta Staton, Faye Hannah, Dorskie Flowers and Mildred Glover; 2 brothers, Luke McCarty and James Earnest McCarty; and 4 brothers-in-law.
Pallbearers will be Morris Smith, Joe Thigpen, Gary Looney, Travis Glover, Trae Glover and Gary Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
