Services to honor his life will be held at Gipson Funeral Home in Lufkin on Sunday, September 14, 2025. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 4:00 p.m. Vernon will be laid to rest at Wallace Chapel Cemetery in Hudson, Texas.
Vernon is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Jan Higgins; his son Kevin Higgins and wife Jennifer; his daughter Misti West and husband Bradley; and his cherished grandchildren Joshua Higgins and wife Bethany, Jordan Tourney and husband Colton, Jeremy Higgins, Kaleigh West, and Kaysie West. He also leaves behind his sister Sheila Lester and her husband Atmar, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Rashea Higgins; his parents; his brother James Thomas Carlile; sister-in-law Karen Carlile; and his sister Dema Halsell.
Vernon proudly served in the United States Army as a Chaplain Assistant, stationed at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Arizona. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life, and he was an ordained Baptist deacon who served his church and community with kindness and humility.
A man of many interests, Vernon had a passion for photography, woodworking, and his trusty Kubota tractors. He found joy in the simple things and was happiest when surrounded by family, nature, and the work of his hands.
Vernon will be remembered for his unwavering faith, gentle spirit, and deep love for his family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
