Mrs. Major Virginia Lee Alexander Powell

Services for Mrs. Major Virginia Lee Powell, 86, of Lufkin, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 2, 2015 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Major Hank Harwell and Captain Michelle Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mrs. Powell was born October 21, 1928 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Edith (Drummond) and Emory H. Alexander. She passed away Friday, June 26, 2015 in Lufkin, Texas.

She was a graduate of the Salvation Army Training College and was an officer with the Salvation Army. She loved the Lord and spent her life serving and ministering to others. Always remembering the needs of others, she was a dedicated prayer warrior. She loved her family and loved to make people happy.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Kathy and Jim Stoner of Conroe and Mary Beth Powell of Lufkin; son, Steven Powell of Lufkin; grandchildren, Haley and Bryan Stoner of Conroe; sisters, Jackie Swyers and husband Gordon of Atlanta, Georgia, Gerry Ray of Birmingham, Alabama, Imogene England and husband John of Clarksburg, West Virginia, and Doris Reese of Groveland, New York; brother, Ron Alexander and wife Faith Ann of Port Richey, Florida; sister-in-law, Kitty Cannon of Salisbury, Maryland; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Powell.

Pallbearers will be Steven Powell, Bryan Stoner, Zack McArthur, Arturo Mendoza, and Capt. Jason Moore.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of Mrs. Powell’s past Sunday School classes.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Powell’s memory may be made to The Salvation Army Corps Community Center, 412 S. Third Street, Lufkin, TX or to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, TX 75904.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Gipson Funeral Home
