Mrs. Ann M. (Sorrenti) McGee, 88, of Danvers, formerly of Lynn, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease, died peacefully surrounded by her family on December 6, 2013. Former wife of the late Hon. Thomas W. McGee, former Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
Ann was born in Everett, daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine (Libro) Sorrenti. She was a resident of Lynn for most of her life before moving to Danvers three years ago. She was a graduate of Everett High School, Class of 1943. After her children were grown, she returned to work at Vogue Apparel and later Brooks Brothers, and loved nothing more than to share her keen sense of style with a neophyte.
Ann’s true devotion was raising her family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and attending the kid’s games and different events and activities. Annie loved entertaining, was an excellent cook, and you could be assured that there was a pot of sauce or a soup simmering on the stove. She loved to travel to Florida and the Caribbean, and we still talk about how much she enjoyed her trips to Italy and Ireland. She loved beautiful things, whether it was a tree that caught her eye or the cut of a beautiful suit. Ann was an avid sports fan and never missed watching the Pats. This year’s Red Sox World Series win gave her special delight. She was a rabid fan of all things Notre Dame, and was immensely proud of seeing her daughter graduate from ND - surpassed only by attending her granddaughter’s graduation in South Bend and her grandson’s upcoming graduation as a member of the Class of 2015. She was a long time dedicated St. Mary’s Communicant for many years.
She read the newspaper daily and loved to comment on current affairs, and her political insights were more astute than the Gallup poll - any politician that managed to get her approval was well on the way to victory. She was elegant, generous and loving, and fought valiantly against the indignities of Parkinson’s to maintain her unique style and grace.
Devoted mother of State Senator Thomas M. McGee and his wife Maria of Lynn, Shawn P. McGee and his wife Sheryl of Georgetown, Colleen McGee Kavanaugh and her husband Gerry Kavanaugh of New Bedford and Alexandria, Va., and her devoted son and caregiver “My Michael” McGee of Danvers. Loving grandmother to Kelly Carter and her husband Mike, Marianne, Shawn Patrick and Erin McGee, Casey Stanton and her husband Felipe Witchger, Gordon Stanton, and Thomas and Katherine McGee. Doting great-grandmother to Brianna, Aidan and Logan Carter, Savannah and Leah Rando, and Micaela Josephine Witchger. Dear sister of the late Joseph Sorrenti, Annette ”Bebe” DeLuca, Anthony Sorrenti, Lillian Porcaro, Thomas, Frank and John Sorrenti, and Mary Wood. Ann was also loved by several nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home 157 Maple St., Lynn, on Friday at 10 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, 8 S Common Street, Lynn, at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Wednesday and Thursday 4 - 8PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ann’s name to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, www.michaeljfox.org/Give_To_Research. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. For online register book, please visit www.cuffemcginn.com
