

Ann Emma (Vickerson) Thornell, age 82, passed away peacefully on March 28,2026, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born on August 13th, 1943, in Winthrop, Massachusetts, Ann was the beloved daughter of the late James and Dorothy (Donovan) Vickerson.
A proud graduate of Winthrop High School’s class of 1961. Ann pursued her passion for helping others by attending the Salem Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1964 as a registered nurse. Her career as a labor and delivery nurse reflected her kindness and thoughtfulness, touching countless lives throughout her years of service. In Ann’s later years of her career, she generously helped new mothers in need, providing them with guidance and support in starting a new and healthy life.
She is predeceased by her parents, her daughter Tracy Thornell; her sister Martha Hennigar; her brothers James Vickerson and Thomas Vickerson; and her sister-in-law Faith Vickerson.
Ann found joy in planning special getaways with her grandchildren and treasured every moment spent with them. An animal lover, she surrounded herself with many furry friends. She also enjoyed traveling and hosting gatherings for her wide circle of friends and family on Marco Island, Florida and in New England. Ann was always up for fun, her warm hospitality and thoughtful nature left an enduring impression on all who knew her.
Ann’s family was the cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her son DJ Thornell and his wife Nancy; her granddaughter Casey Burby and wife Shawndale; her grandson Adam Thornell and his partner McKenna Matwyko; and her cherished great grandchildren Jagger Thornell, Brianna Burby and Maysen Burby. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Dorothy Vickerson and brother-in-law Ron Hennigar, along with several nieces and nephews. Ann shared a close bond with Pat Kearney, they spent many wonderful years together. Pat’s companionship and support brought comfort to Ann during her illness. Her many nursing friends and Sharon Kearney made it possible to care for Ann as a team during her illness.
Wherever Ann went, laughter and good times would follow. May Ann’s memory bring comfort to those who loved her. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for the love she so generously shared throughout her life.
Ann’s visitation will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026 from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans, www.dav.org, or to a charity of your choice.
