Hjalmar Lorne “Swede” Ahl, 95, of Derry, NH, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 after a brief illness. Born in 1927 in Lynn, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Nelson) Ahl. He was the loving husband of the late Irene (Morgan) Ahl with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.
Swede worked at Raytheon for over 47 years as a Precision Inspector, and also worked part time at Sears in Saugus for 20 years. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Swede’s favorite hobbies were crafting and building items to give as gifts to family and friends. His craft room resembled Santa’s workshop, filled with projects for every season and holiday. He loved to make bird houses, feeders, and wreaths for all occasions, and give them to his family and friends. He always had multiple projects going at one time and was always two steps ahead of every holiday!
He is survived by his two daughters, Donna (Ahl) and her husband Donald Rodgers of Derry, NH, Annamarie Ahl of Sanford, ME, daughter-in-law Deborah (Dunning) Ahl of Litchfield, NH, and son-in-law Philip Marvel of Biddeford, ME. He was the father to the late Michael Ahl, who passed away last year. He was the brother to Florence (Ahl) Willman of Harwich, and the late Alden Ahl, Evelyn (Ahl) Sheehan and Irene (Ahl) Gregory.
Affectionately known as Papa and Great Papa, he will be greatly missed by his seven grandchildren; Jane and her husband Scott Bates, Jason Rodgers, Charles Rodgers, Ryan Ahl and his wife Jamie, Micaela and her husband Robert Ford, Anna and her husband Kevin Roberts, and Ashley and her husband Eric Gendron, and nine great grandchildren; Tyler, Alida, and Danielle Bates, Maisie and Calvin Ahl, Justin and Jacob Ford, Tommy Roberts, and Alden Gendron.
