

Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late “Jack” and Marie (Quinn) O’Donnell. After serving as an Army M.P. during World War II, John worked almost 40 years at General Electric as a machinist and Union Steward.
At the G.E., he met his future wife, Lena DiPietro. They settled on Merrill Ave where they lived for 50 years.
John was a talented artist, passionate about watercolor painting, photography, architecture, science, math and the Lynn Public Library. He and Lena became proficient happy ballroom dancers. John also served as Financial Secretary at the Nahant Knights of Columbus Council. He led a full life with a dry sense of humor.
He is survived by his children, Frances Marshall of Swampscott, Helen O’Donnell of Winchendon, Elaine O’Donnell of Santa Fe, NM and Neil O’Donnell and his wife Ana of Keene, NH. He was the Grandfather of Melanie Buckland and Kathleen Hock and the Great Grandfather to Lucas Buckland and Samuel, Aidan and Sydney Hock. He was the brother of Thomas O’Donnell of Lynn and Marie McLaughlin of Beverly. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Francis, Charles and Joseph O’Donnell and Catherine Mulheir.
A Graveside Service will be held in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, 185 Lake St. Peabody on Wednesday at 11:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting Hours in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home 157 Maple St. Lynn on Tuesday from 3:30-6:30PM. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to the charity of one’s choice.
