

Mr. Luke E. Thompson IV, age 61, of Haverhill, beloved husband of Deborah (Ginsberg) Thompson, passed away in peace after a long and courageous battle with cancer on July 21, 2010 with his loving family by his side.
Born in Lynn, on September 5, 1948, he was the son of Ann E. (Daley) Thompson and the late Luke E. Thompson III. A native of Swampscott, MA, Luke was a graduate of Saint John’s Prep in Danvers and College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. He was a strong supporter of both the men and women’s Holy Cross hockey teams, and continued to serve as an announcer for games for many years following his graduation from the college.
Luke was an employee of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for over 35 years, retiring in 2004. He held various positions including Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources, Assistant Secretary in the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, Financial Manager of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, and as the Financial Officer in the Office of the State Treasurer.
He was an avid sports fan, and had an exceptional ability at recalling statistics and events of games and teams from almost any era. He was a particularly devoted Red Sox and Bruins fan; he especially enjoyed traveling to watch his son coach college football. His interest in sports extended into collecting sports memorabilia. He was a partner in A-1 Sports Memorabilia and spent many happy hours organizing his sports collection. He also enjoyed a good game of golf and playing poker with his buddies. He was a music lover with an eclectic taste. He enjoyed reading history, particularly about the Civil War.
Luke was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with family, friends and colleagues. His grandchildren were the “light of his life.” Always close to his heart along with his wife and his mother were his children, Janice E. Thompson-Scobie and her husband Steve of Rutland, MA, Luke E. Thompson V and his wife Kristin of Alexandria, VA, Benjamin M. Thompson and his girlfriend Christine Martelle of Hudson, MA and Diane M. Thompson of West Boylston, MA; his brothers Terrance Thompson of Harrison, ME and Kevin Thompson of Swampscott, MA; his sisters Colleen Thompson-Wilkens and her husband Peter of Marblehead, MA and Kathleen Canavan and her husband Paul of Marblehead, MA. He also leaves his brother-in-law, Robert Ingram of Swampscott, MA and his sister-in-law, Margaret Thompson of Milford, MA. Grampy will be greatly missed by his five grandchildren, Sam, Claire, Charlie, and Henry Scobie and Maddie Thompson. He also leaves his former wife Judith (Ventres) Thompson of Worcester, MA and many nieces, nephews, grandnephews and cousins as well as his pal Rudy. In addition, he leaves his sister-in-law Janice Schramm, her husband Larry and niece Hayley of Weymouth, MA.
Luke will now be reunited with his father, Luke, his brother Timothy and his sister, Maureen Ingram and many cherished aunts and uncles.
Luke’s Funeral will be held from the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, MA on Monday at 9:45AM followed by a Funeral Mass in Saint John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott at 11:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment Swampscott Cemetery, Swampscott, MA. Visiting hours Sunday 2-6PM.
