LYNN – Robert L. Grant, 77, of Salem, formerly of Lynn, passed away on Sunday, September 30, 2018 after a brief illness. Born in Lynn, Bob was the beloved son of the late Charles F. and Annie E. (Teal) Grant.
Bob graduated from Lynn English High School with the class of 1959 and earned a B.A. in Business from Salem State College. Bob enjoyed working as a high quality tester of jet engines at General Electric in Lynn for over 27 years. Simply, Bob’s goal was to keep people flying safely with GE jet engines all over the world. Despite his excellent work ethic, he sadly, suffered with a hearing disability in both ears due to the testing frequencies of jet engines. He, however, earned his pilot’s license and even obtained instruments ratings. After working at GE, Bob continued his education at North Shore Community College in Lynn, earning 6 different Associates Degrees, including in Aviation and Computer Programing. While at North Shore, he received the Distinguished Service Award from Phi Theta Kappa in 1995. He also enjoyed part-time teaching business and computer courses there.
Bob is survived by his loving sister, with whom he lived in Salem for 22 years, Marjorie Grant, former 34 year Lynn Public School Teacher, including at Lynn English High School for many years; brothers, Alfred D. Grant and his wife, Elizabeth of Knoxville, TN and Peter C. Grant of N. Brookfield, MA and his former wife, Donna Grant, of Worcester; cherished, nephews and nieces, Daniel, David, Sarah Beth, and Rebeccah of Knoxville and Kyle, Jason and Matthew of N. Brookfield, and close friends, Bruce and John, who he’s known since they were Boy Scouts together in the troop at the former St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Lynn.
A meteorology and earth sciences enthusiast, Bob shared a daily e-mail with his brother, Al in Tennessee covering their common interest in hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, rainstorms and blizzards and always enjoyed talking about many of these topics covered by the Weather Channel on cable. Bob even enjoyed shoveling snow, often beating the plow drivers in his development to clearing the driveway and sidewalks in front of his home. He always graciously assisted both family members and strangers who had a need.
Bob also dabbled with mechanical toys, H&O electric trains at Christmas time, and caring for his beloved red sports car. He also spent time watching the jets line-up over Salem for landing at Logan Airport in Boston. He kept fit and enjoyed playing tennis and walking 2 to 3 miles on Lynn Beach most nights of the year. He would also enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers, and vanilla and coffee frappes. Bob was a Civil War buff and enjoyed traveling to many of those historic sites and also loved to travel to Las Vegas. He loved tending to his many colored impatiens and hibiscus garden which remains in full bloom. He was an avid fan of the Patriots and Boston Celtics, in the stand and on TV. His favorite professional golfer was Tiger Woods and he recently enjoyed following Tiger’s recent recovery of his golf skills.
Bob’s funeral and interment services were private and under the care of the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, Lynn.
