

Mr. Robert L. Hayden, age 88 years, of Salem, formerly of Swampscott, died Saturday at Grosvenor Park Nursing Home, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Edith E. (Saint) Hayden, with whom he shared 66 years of Marriage. Born in Salem he was the son of the late Maurice L. and Mildred (Doty) Hayden. He attended Salem schools and graduated from Rindge Tech, Class of 1939. He graduated from Harvard University, Class of 1944, and received his Masters Degree in Education from Boston University. He served in the U. S. Army as a translator in Northern France and Central Europe as a Technician 5th Grade, with Company K, 315th Infantry Regiment, during WW II. Mr. Hayden was employed as a teacher in Ayer, MA from 1948 - 1952, at Lawrence Academy in Groton, and at Swampscott High School, where he taught French and Spanish from 1955 until he retired in 1984. He was a member of the First Church Congregational Swampscott, where he sang in the choir for over 50 years, a 50 years member of Wayfarers Lodge in Swampscott, a member of Philanthropic Lodge in Marblehead, and bowled in the Swampscott Teachers bowling league. He enjoyed watching sports and was an avid Red Sox Fan. In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons Robert L. and his wife Gloria Hayden, Jr. of Santa Fe, NM, Bruce W. and his wife Cyndi Hayden of Warsaw, NY, Todd A. and his wife Jill Hayden of St. Louis, MN, two daughters Elizabeth L. and her husband Robert Plourde of Peabody, Judith E. and her husband John Toner of Marblehead, seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Richard D. Hayden, and grandfather of the late Blake Adair. Service Details: A graveside service will held Wednesday at 12:00 noon in Swampscott Cemetery, followed by Memorial services at the First Church Congregational, Monument Ave. Swampscott at 1:00 PM, followed by a celebration of his life in Clark Hall to which all are invited to attend.
