Born in West Seattle, WA he grew up in Bothell, WA in the Union 76 gas station his parents owned & was affectionately called “Little City Hall.” He would run lunch down the street to his dad in his bare feet at the age of 5 and later worked there in his teens. Life growing up centered around playing sports, family vacations boating the San Juan Islands, the family business, and being involved and giving back to the Bothell Community. He was a man with a strong work ethic who was a deep thinker and an avid reader.
He met the love of his life, Carol Aries, while they were ASB Officers at W.A. Anderson (now McMenamins Anderson School) in jr high. He loved football whether he was playing, coaching, or cheering on BHS & his grandson. Allen and his grandfather Harold “Pop” Keeney would sit down after his HS games and run through every play together. Growing up in Bothell was truly a “Friday Night Lights” community affair where the whole family would attend the games. He graduated from Bothell HS in 1963 where he was inducted into the National Honor Society, was one of the Top Ten academic students in his class, and was voted as “Best All-Around” by his classmates. After graduation he attended Washington State University to become a Cougar once again. Al & Carol married in 1966 while both were attending WSU. Al graduated in 1967 with a BA in English Education and a minor in Mathematics.
Allen started his career in education teaching English & Math in the Shoreline School District from 1967-1979 where he also coached football & track. He was awarded his standard teaching credentials from the University of Washington in 1969. In 1970 their daughter Jennifer was born & they bought their first home in Lake Forest Park, WA.
He received a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration & Principal’s credentials from the UW in 1976.
He had a fondness for Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and was involved in designing and building their new home in Kenmore, WA where days were spent teaching and evenings building the house which was completed in 1979; the same year he was hired at Bothell HS as an Asst VP. He was appointed to Inglemoor HS as Principal in 1982 and was especially proud to have been elected as a Danforth Mentor Principal and attended the Principal’s Academy at Harvard University in 1985. He also was recognized as one of the State Principals of the Year awarded by WA State Excellence in Education in 1988. He received a call in 1992 asking him to return to his Alma Mater as Principal and retired from Bothell HS in 2003. Growing restless in retirement he worked with the Northshore School District on the redesign of BHS and construction of the Northshore Performing Arts Center from 2003-2008.
For many years Al was involved in committees & activities related to education. Among those are the Shoreline Community College Advisory Board, the WA Interscholastic Athletic Assoc Executive Board, WA Alliance for Better Schools, Northshore Scholarship Foundation, Northshore Kiwanis, Bothell Alumni Association, City of Bothell Stakeholders Committee, and the local old-timers “Bothell Breakfast Club,” but he was most proud of his family whom he loved and cared for fiercely. In his free time he loved to travel, read, water/snow ski, boating & catching crab on his family property on Lopez Island, cooking, cars and sudoku.
Allen is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Jennifer (Todd) Suckut, grandchildren Trent & Josie Suckut, brother Bob (Kathy) Haynes, sister Susan Jundt, niece Heidi (Dan) Morris, great-nieces Siena & Audrey Morris, sister-in-law Annette Aries and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Harold “Pop” Keeney, brother Steven Haynes, parents Lowell & Evelyn (Keeney) Haynes and brother-in-law Jim Aries.
