David Lee DeLaPeña Sr. was born on July 30, 1949, the third of seven sons to John and Charlotte DeLaPeña. David grew up in Watsonville California and could be found working in the family’s apple orchard, fixing old cars, or relaxing on the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. David graduated from Watsonville High School in 1967.
At the young age of 18, he met the love of his life and soulmate Patricia Hagen. Three months later they were married on May 21, 1968
He is survived by four children, David, Misti, DeAnne and Erin; their spouses Jeromy Smith, Rhonda DeLaPeña and Tyler Hell; and his grandchildren that he loved and adored Alexis, Malakai, and Isabella.
David was a man of faith and compassion. He was the first to lend a helping hand to families or friends in need. A dreamer by nature; he had a passion for the outdoors whether it be fishing with one of his brothers, riding bikes with his wife or children, or golfing.
He served his country as an Air Traffic Controller in the Navy for 22 years achieving rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer before an honorable discharge in 1990. David then began to serve his country working first for the United States Postal Service and then the Federal Aviation Administration.
David touched many lives in his 64 years on this earth. Through each act of kindness and generosity he made this world a better place to live. His family will remember his ability to love unconditionally.
He will be missed by his surviving wife, children, grandchildren, father, brothers, family and friends. His family takes peace in knowing his suffering has ended and he is in heaven with our Lord and family that passed on before him.
