Edith was born to Francis & Lorraine Burchfield on May 30, 1945 in Portland, Oregon, the oldest of three children. Edith attended Toutle Lake and Castle Rock schools, graduating in 1963 from Castle Rock High School. Shortly after graduation, she married Robert Alger and later divorced. In 1970, she moved to Lake Stevens, WA, where she met and fell in love with George “Mike” Evans and married him. This November 14th would have been their 40th Wedding Anniversary.
Edith worked for Safeway Stores for over 30 years, but her most cherished, long-time position was at Safeway on Broadway in Everett, WA for over 26 years. Her fellow employees and regular customers became her second family away from home, and it was never more evident than after she was diagnosed with this devastating disease. Before ALS, Edith never missed work, and even after diagnosis, she worked as long as possible. During her years at Safeway, she met a special person, Cindi Montopoli, who became her best friend. They enjoyed numerous adventures together including hiking, driving the countryside, anything to do with the outdoors and taking pictures. Edith & Mike spent many years hiking in the northern Cascades and on the Olympic Peninsula. If there was ever any doubt about how important family was to Edith, all you had to do was ask if she had any pictures with her. Actually, she had so many family and hiking pictures for show-and-tell that they would fill a bedroom.
Edith is survived by her husband, Mike Evans, her children: Theresa (Don) Newman of Kelso, WA; Joe (Julie) Alger of Marysville, WA; Monica Alger of Parker, CO; Pam (O’Shay) Barner of Parker, CO; Jay (Gayle) Evans of Marysville, WA; and Justin (Angela) Evans of Lake Stevens, WA. Edith & Mike also have 15 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Also surviving her is a brother, Chris Burchfield of Ocean Shores, WA; a sister, Kathleen Loney of Longview, WA; and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Edith was preceded in death by both parents.
A special thank you to Aleta & Mario Ocana, their family and staff of St. Jude’s Comfort Care in Lake Stevens, who took excellent care of Edith this last year while under Hospice care. We (the family) know that you loved her, too.
