Ed was born on May 16, 1943 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Irene and Edward J. Walther. He went to a Catholic school and was an altar boy. He left school to help support his family by giving his paychecks to his mother and helping take care of his younger siblings.
Ed received his AA from Edmonds Community College in Construction Management during his rehabilitation time from his work injuries. Ed proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for 3 years after he received his GED.
Ed was a union ironworker, until his retirement in 1994. Even then, he was in it for life! His passion for this work was carried on through his sons, grandsons, and other family members or friends that wanted help getting into the trade.
For 47 years, Ed was sober by the grace of God!
In 1976, Ed met his love Penny. They were married on December 9, 1978 in Edmonds, WA, and were married for 44 beautiful years. They combined their family and worked through many struggles to get to their retirement bliss of snow-birding, cruising, and spending as much time as possible with family.
Ed was an active member of his community. He was a devoted Catholic who was a member of the congregation at Blessed Sacrament Church in Seattle for 45 years. He was also involved at St. Mary’s in Marysville, and St. George’s in Arizona. He was a part of Gym Rats at LA Fitness, and a proud member of the AZ Geezers Motorcycle Club.
In his spare time, Ed played pickleball and water volleyball; he was a cribbage master and an avid movie goer. He went fishing, loved traveling, and loved his Harley motorcycles. Ed was also a founding member and faithful contributor of the WA State Lottery. But above all, he loved spreading the gospel.
Ed is preceded in death by his mother and father, his daughter Bernadette Elder, sister Patricia Miller, and brother Jim Walther. He is survived by his wife Penny, sons Joe Walther and Michael Hetland, daughters Patty Wimmer and Teresann Kirk, sister Janice Stavee, and numerous grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, and nephews that were dear to his heart.
Ed was a man of faith, a devoted family man, and a loyal friend. He had a BIG personality and was always in charge, but would also drop what he was doing to help ANYONE in need. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. The family would like to give a special “thank you” to the angels that were with him on his last ride from Fountain Hills.
A committal service for Ed will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery on March 30, 2023 at 10 AM. Memorial donations in Ed’s name can be made to the Everett Gospel Mission, PO Box 423, Everett, WA 98203.
