John Trygve Glover was born to Alice Hansen and Donald Glover in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on May 18, 1937. John graduated from Vancouver High School, earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, served in the Air Force, and worked for decades as an aerospace engineer at Boeing. He married Claudia Ann Golding Grambo on April 27, 1974. They made a home and raised their son in SeaTac, where John remained after Claudia's passing. He was especially close to his brothers, Jim, Don, and Bob, in whose company he was always at home, whether wandering around Port Townsend or eating breakfast at Denny's. After years of poor health, John died peacefully at Highline Medical Center in Burien, Washington, on February 20, 2017.
John enjoyed drawing, painting, leatherworking, woodworking, and playing guitar. A lifelong reader and a published author, in later years he spent many happy hours in reading and writing groups at Valley View Library, where he served on the Advisory Board. A lover of the sea, he circumnavigated the globe from the comfort of his armchair. He relished puns, limericks, and Scandinavian humor generally.
John was predeceased by his parents, dear wife Claudia, and brother James. He leaves behind a beloved son and daughter-in-law, John Trygve Glover II and Kyla Elizabeth Tew of Henrico, Virginia; brother Donald of Seattle and his wife, Nicole Fronteau, of Somerville, Massachusetts; brother Robert and his wife, Janice, of West Seattle, and their adult children, Danielle and Ryan; the many members of his wife's family, who kindly welcomed him; and all the friends with whom he debated, golfed, walked, played cards, or talked books.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills. Private burial will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make remembrances in his name to Audubon Washington or The Center for Wooden Boats.
