Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, Sonja loved her family, music, and God. All had a special place in her heart.
Born to Norwegian immigrants, Sverre and Marie Sanne, Sonja began her journey in Anaconda, Montana, where her father worked at the copper smelter. As a child, she was a little songbird, and her heart found joy in the church. Her love of God continued throughout her life in song and music.
She met the love of her life while visiting her sister Esther in Seattle. Both sisters decided to attend a dance held by the Sons of Norway lodge. This is where she met Alfred Berg. Their relationship blossomed, and in 1960, they exchanged vows and embarked on their beautiful marriage that spanned nearly six decades. Together, they raised a loving family, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of their four children, Kevin, David, John, and Kirsten. Their legacy continued with six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Sonja's love of music took her from the mountains of Missoula where she attended the University of Montana, to the vibrant city of Seattle, where she completed her music degree at the University of Washington. Her passion for music was a driving force in her life, and she shared this passion with others for over 30 years. In her home studio she taught both private and group piano lessons, and all 4 of her children learned to play. Her nurturing spirit led her to King's Elementary School, where she taught piano for almost 10 years, leaving an everlasting impact on countless young hearts.
Her deep love of music was equaled by her love and dedication to the Lutheran Church where she sang, led the children's choir, and often played piano and organ for services. She enjoyed working with children and shared her faith by teaching Sunday school. She was an eager and consistent contributor to Bible study groups.
Her Norwegian heritage was a source of immense pride, celebrated through her membership with the Sons of Norway lodge in Edmonds along with her husband Alfred. Whether dancing, serving meals, or helping with events, Sonja embraced her roots with enthusiasm, leaving an indomitable mark on the community.
Sonja Berg's life was a symphony of love, faith, and joy, and her legacy will continue to play on in the hearts of those she touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions to Lutheran World Relief, a cause close to Sonja's heart.
A celebration of Sonja's life, filled with the melodies she so dearly loved, will take place on Friday, December 15th, at 12:30 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6215 196th St SW, Lynnwood, WA 98036.
