Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Brenda will be remembered for her love of kids, her creative abilities, her sense of humor, and her love of activities like sewing, fishing, throwing darts, playing cards and driving around in her bright yellow mustang—one hand on the wheel, the other on an ice-cold pop!
Born on October 9th, 1963, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, WV, Brenda was the loving daughter of Lowery Athey, Jr. and Wanda Gray, stepdaughter of Buddy Gray. She was also a beloved sister to Earl Athey, Vallie Hill and Steven Athey. She went on to become the wife of Lee Lafferty, with whom she shared 4 children. She was later married to David “Randy” Edwards, who passed in 2002. After his passing, she went on to become the beloved wife of Robert “Bobby” O’Neal, with whom she spent her remaining years. Her greatest joy came from the blessing of 6 beautiful grandchildren, as well.
Brenda was a proud employee of the U.S. Postal service, beginning her career in Beckley, WV, and later transferring to Macon, GA. After retiring due to health challenges she faced from a car accident, she continued her passion for helping others by serving as a Sunday School teacher for over 20 years, nurturing and inspiring young minds in her church family.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby O’Neal; her mother and stepfather, Wanda and Buddy Gray; her children, Christopher Lafferty, Kerri Spitz (David Spitz), Joshua Lafferty (Ashlee Lafferty), and Jonathan Lafferty; and her treasured grandchildren, Dakota Lafferty (19), Cole Lafferty (13), Liam Spitz (11), Jacob Spitz (9), Nathan Spitz (6), and Brenlee Spitz (3). She is preceded in death by her father, Lowery Athey, Jr., and her siblings, Earl Athey, Vallie Hill, and Steven Athey.
