

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 2:00 p.m.in the Chapel of Macon Memorial Funeral Home. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service in Macon Memorial Cemetery with Rev. John Kinser officiating. Mrs. Hancock, 97, died peacefully on Monday, May 14, 2012 at the Oaks at Peake Assisted Living Center.
Christine Tatum Friddell was born on July 8, 1914 in Roopville, GA to parents, the late Thomas Fletcher and Bessie Key Friddell. She married the love of her life, Clifford Leslie Powers, in 1931. They raised five children and were happily married for 42 years, before Leslie’s death in 1973.
Christine was a devoted wife and mother, a strong, devout Christian and at the time of her death, she had been a member of New Heights’ Baptist Church (formerly Cherokee Heights Baptist Church) for 77 years and a member of the Ira D. Green Sunday School Class. Leslie and Christine donated the chimes used at CHBC and for many years furnished the piano which was used at The Easter Sunrise Service atop Coleman Hill in downtown Macon and many other sunrise services. Christine was a member of Howard Community Club and Colarparchee Garden Club.
She was also predeceased by her second husband, Ernest Howell ‘Dick’ Hancock, a daughter, Gertrude Powers ‘Trudy’ Pierce and her husband, Robert ‘Bobby’ Pierce, son, Robert Lee ‘Bob’ Powers and three brothers, Henry Friddell (Jimmy), Thomas Friddell (Ruth) and Fletcher Friddell (Myrtice), two sisters, Mary Rumph (Charles) and Lucille Burns (Monroe).
She is survived by her sister and brother- in- law, Virginia and Charles Thomas, Temple, GA and sister- in- law, Ethelene Hubbard, Carrollton, GA, daughter, Barbara Ann Powers, Savannah, GA, two sons, Clifford L. Powers, Jr. (Faye), Cumming, GA, and, Richard Allen Powers, Sr. (Sarah), Clayton, GA., eleven grandchildren, Leesa Powers Burrell (Jim), Cathy Powers Payne, Jeanie Powers Kramb (Paul), Richard Allen Powers, Jr. (Tami), Kimberly Powers Williams (Jim), Heather Powers Miller (Danny), Joshua Allen Powers, Robert ‘Rob’ Pierce (Pam), Russell ‘Rus’ Pierce (Kim), Jennifer Pierce Hughes (Mark), Justin B. Powers, granddaughter, Ginny Edens; 14 great grandchildren and 9 great, great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
The family extends its heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Oaks at Peake Assisted Living Center and to United Hospice of Macon staff for the loving and compassionate care given to our Mother. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that tributes in memory of Christine Powers Hancock be made to Richard’s Kids, a nonprofit charity founded by Richard and Sarah Powers to benefit the needy children of Rabun County, 47 Deer Creek Trail, Clayton GA 30525 or United Hospice of Macon, 6060 Lake Commons Drive, Macon 31220.
