Denise Vernessa Thomas was a very warm, kind and loving individual who counseled, and inspired others most of her life. She loved people and encouraged them to overcome obstacles to their success. She frequently rendered her physical support as well. Truly she was a great neighbor and dedicated friend.

Denise was born in New York City, NY - the daughter of the late Oliver Thomas Jr., and Mrs. Theodora M. (Smith) Thomas. Reared in Macon GA, she attended Henry A. Hunt, Metta T. Danforth, and Winship elementary schools, and earned her diploma at Central High School. She attended Oakwood College in Huntsville, AL.

Denise was a diligent, faithful member of her native Macon Bethany Seventh-day Adventist Church; and also attended the Macon Wimbish Road Seventh-day Adventist Church. In youthful days, Denise and her brother Robert exercised their vocal talents in service to God as members of “The Young Angelics”, a renowned local gospel chorale. She later sang with “The Love of God Singers”.

She was multi-talented, with considerable artistic and academic skills. She was gifted in the areas of poetry, interior and fashion design, gourmet cuisine, handicrafts, hospitality and event planning, and business management. Her artwork often became keepsakes for others. She was a licensed cosmetologist; and certified in medical assisting & transcription, pharmacy technology, drafting design, and culinary techniques. At age 17 she was selected as the first official “Miss Afro Macon” at a ceremony conducted at the Macon City Auditorium where she performed an original skit.

Denise's skilled passion for cosmetology was evident throughout her business career, which she launched by partnering with Zelma Redding in creating “Denise’s Hairum” (Bloomfield Rd.) a full service salon. As business grew she became the sole owner-operator and master cosmetician of “Len Dens” (Montpelier & Anthony Rd.) which thrived for over 12 years and amassed countless loyal clients. Prior to relocating to Florida, Denise and her associate Jackie Harpe also catered weddings and various social events.

Denise departed this life peacefully due to natural causes on June 8, 2019.

She is survived by her mother: Theodora M. Smith of Macon, GA; brother: Dr. Robert B. Thomas, DDS (“Bobby”) of Decatur, GA; aunt: Josephine Smith of Macon, GA; sister-in-law: Angela D. Thomas of Decatur, GA; nephews: Robert B. Thomas, Jr. of Huntsville, AL and Ryan B. Thomas of Crofton, Maryland; niece: Shari M. Thomas; first cousin: Amelia T. Smith of Tucson, AZ; cousins: Jackie Seider of South Bay, FL; Alice Bailey of Macon, GA; dear friends: Audrey Philpot and Patrice Finney of Macon, GA; Robin Jones of West Palm Bch., FL; and a host of other relatives and friends.

WE WILL MISS YOU

The Lord could not have created a more honest and selfless person. Denise deeply cherished her family and saw a potential friend in whomever she might meet. Our sister friend would routinely and happily give her VERY last so that others might be happier if only for a moment. Denise carried with her an enduring joy for life. She had an infectious smile and laugh that gave comfort to all no matter their troubles.

Even during her last few months with us, she expressed more concern for the well being of those around her than herself. Her courage and strength will forever live within us as and example of true faith, relenting only to the will of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

DENISE, you fought so hard.... May you now and forever rest in peace....

Denise was my beautician and my daughters from the early 70's until she closed her shop in Macon. She was like a daughter to me and I went to see her during her last days on earth and I'm so glad I did. Such a beautiful lady and so talented. By human standards, she left us too soon but God the Father wanted her to be with Him. To the family, I offer my condolences and may you be comforted by knowing that she knew Jesus.

To the Thomas and Smith families - Mommy, Bobby and Aunt Jo:

My prayers and deepest sympathy are extended to you for the loss of Denise. Her humorous personality, artistic qualities, creative talents, and keen eye for fashion and elaborately coiffed hairstyles will always be a significant part of my memory. May the promise of that "blessed hope" rest and abide with you all; may the peace of God surround you; may the love of Jesus Christ enfold you; and may the comfort of the Holy Spirit envelop you now and in the days to come. May she rest in peace until the trumpet sounds and God's children, including Denise, are called from their resting places.
Sincerely,
Esther J. Alleyne-Thomas, Orangeburg, South Carolina

Denise Thomas was a one of kind spirit ,who's beauty and strength was only surpassed by her kindness and faith. We shared years of love, laughs , achievements , sorrows , loss , and most of all friendship. Denise was my rock , my big sister , my best friend. She was a quite storm , and you did not want to be on the wrong side of side of that storm , she has rescued me from bad decisions (Hairdo's and outfits & the occasional relationship)Always prayed with me on all matters. We have spent many sleepless nights laying in bed eating Publix chocolate overload cake and watching the Color Purple , or our favorite Fighting Temptation. I am forever grateful to have had her in my life, she always hold a piece of my heart. Proverbs 13;20.

To the family and loved ones of Denise Vernessa, who we know will be dearly missed. Almighty God promised at Revelation 21:4 that he will wipe away all our tears. Death, pain, and sorrow will be no more. So, you can take great comfort from drawing close to God in prayer. He will help sustain and support all of you to endure during these difficult times. My deepest condolences.
