Dwight Taylor Hampton Sr., beloved husband, father and friend, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on Saturday, January 20, 2018. Born in Macon, Georgia to the late Joseph and Elyse Townsend Hampton, he raised his family in Macon and owned Hampton Maintenance & Repair for many years. Following retirement, he worked as a city inspector. In his younger years, he sailed the world on the USS Yorktown (CV-10) while honorably serving our country in the US Navy. With God-given talent, humor and his famous Jackie Gleason smile, he also raced pigeons semi-professionally, was a beekeeper, won fishing competitions across the Southeast and grew everything from seed, thanks to fond summers spent on his grandparents’ farm. Ask anyone and they’ll tell you he made the best dang hot sauce around.
Dwight Sr. was preceded in death by his wife Glenda. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Layne Pierce (Sherman); son, Dwight Jr. (Mary); six beautiful grandchildren, Ryan, Casey, Kimberly, Kaitlyn, Bowman and Gracie; step-children, Charles Ware, Cindy Smith and Terri Childs (Phil); sister, Ann Boren Hampton; brothers, Richard and Mark; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly.
A memorial service to celebrate a life well-lived will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 11:00am in the Chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Dziadul officiating. The family will greet friends Tuesday night from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any local Veterans program.
