

Ferrell Lovett Penland died Friday, July 6, 2012 after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM Monday in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Alisia O’Reilly will officiate. The family will greet friends from 2:30 until service time at the funeral home on Monday. Pallbearers will be David Smith, Tony Fair, Bill Griffin, Jim McBrayer, James (Tuffy) Rawlins, Robert Williams, Ron Poloncic, Wayne Snow, Rick Kimball, James Dominy, Tom Drake and Doyle Waters. Honorary pallbearers will be Ferrell’s Sigma Nu Brothers from Georgia Southern. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Care Options, 486 New Street, Macon, GA 31201, or the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
Born April 4, 1947 in Macon, Georgia, Ferrell was the son of the late Joseph (Joe) Sharp Penland and Nedra “Dee” J. Parker. He was an honor graduate of Lanier High School in Macon in 1965. Ferrell graduated with honors in 1969 from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Ferrell attended the Master’s Program at Mercer University in Macon.
Ferrell was an area supervisor with the CETA and MDTA, government sponsored programs designed to retain displaced workers. He worked for 29 years in the wine and spirits industry, retiring from United Distributing Company.
An avid golfer, Ferrell was a member of Riverside Golf & Country Club and the Brickyard at Riverside. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working crossword puzzles. As an active alumnus of Georgia Southern and Sigma Nu, he loved attending their football games.
Ferrell is survived by his wife of 30 years, Charlene Penland; son, Jarod L. Penland of Macon; step-sons, whom he loved as his own, Charles “Chuck” E. Leverette of Macon and Robert “Robbie” M. Leverette, Jr. (Stacy) of Cochran; step-grandchildren, Chelsea, Julianna, Rachael and Hayden Leverette; mother, Nedra “Dee” Parker (Gus); brother, Jeff Penland (Judy) of Macon; sister, Debbie Isbell (Randy) of Marietta.
