Genora Davis Godwin

MACON - Genora D. Godwin, 74, passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2011 after a courageous thirteen year battle with pancreatic cancer. Funeral services and a celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Russell Whitehurst and the Rev. Chris Minton will officiate. The family suggests that those who wish make memorial contributions to Lizella Baptist Church, 2950 South Lizella Road, Lizella 31052.

Mrs. Godwin, wife of the late Robert Hinton Godwin, was born in Irwin County the daughter of the late Clarence Edward Davis and Evelyn Elizabeth Dix Davis. She was a graduate of ABAC and George College for Women and was a retired elementary school teacher. Mrs. Godwin taught school for thirty years beginning when only nineteen years old in Irwin County. Then she taught at Morgan Elementary after moving to Macon when her husband went to work at Robins Air Force Base. She enjoyed teaching but especially loved helping children learn to read.

After her retirement, she and her husband, Hinton, enjoyed camping and fishing at Lake Oconee. They liked visiting with fellow campers as much as actually fishing. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved shopping with her granddaughter, Lindsey.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Russell Whitehurst; granddaughter and her husband, Lindsey and A. J. Hopkins; sisters, Mazie Reeves of Fitzgerald, Teresa (Michael) Stokes of Jesup; brothers, Dalton (Robyn) Davis of Macon, Wayne (Kathryn) Davis of South Carolina; brother-in-law, Carroll (Fran) Godwin of Irwinville; sisters-in-law, Rita (Frank) Roberts of White, GA, Sandra (Virgil) Purvis of Fitzgerald; several nieces and nephews and her dear lifelong friend, Brenda Alliston.
