Helen is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Markusen of North Redington Beach, FL; granddaughter Rebecca Gattoni and husband Brian of Herndon Virginia and three great-grandchildren, Teresa, Jack and Bianca Gattoni. Helen was preceded in death by husband John Martin and granddaughter Sarah Markusen.
Helen was born in Columbia, SC the only child to Tom Horne Whisnant and Bessie Thackam on June 5, 1919.
Helen lived a proud life of service as a social worker in North Carolina, South Carolina and Wisconsin. Helen was a volunteer with many organizations including the Grey Ladies, Girl Scouts of America and the Hezekiah Alexander House. Helen was an active member of the Lutheran Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the sorority Delta Delta Delta. Helen was a graduate of Duke University.
A private burial will be held in Columbia, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the American Cancer Society, Girl Scouts of America or Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Macon, GA.
