Born in Macon, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Martha Helene Bennett Thomas and the late Daniel Robert Thomas. Married in Abilene, Texas, in March 1956, she and her husband of 49 years lived in Macon and Warm Springs, Georgia before moving to Jesup where they raised their family and spent 37 years before relocating to Columbia, South Carolina, to be near their children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her siblings and their spouses: Ann and Charles Evans of Macon, Georgia; Faye and Cliff Higbee of Newnan, Georgia; Kathy and Homer Coley, of Gray, Georgia; and Daniel and Dianne Thomas, of Jacksonville, Florida. In addition, she is survived by her son, Richard Charles Calhoun and his wife, Tonjua Rebecca Calhoun, and her daughter, Rene’ Calhoun Bickley and her husband, Howard Earl Bickley, all of Columbia, SC. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Katelyn Nicole Calhoun and Kelsey Rebecca Calhoun of Columbia and her grandson Stetson Reed Bickley and his wife, Natalie Murphy Bickley, of John’s Island, South Carolina. She was predeceased by her sister, Jean Rowe, of Jacksonville, Florida.
Mrs. Calhoun is best known for the decades she spent working as an office manager at Microwave Cable TV in Jesup, Georgia. While a resident of Jesup, she volunteered both her time and talents as a Brownie and Cub Scout Leader, as a Mission Friends teacher and choir member at Calvary Baptist Church, and as clerical staff during the founding and early years of Trinity Baptist Church. Later in life, she was a graduate of Brewton Parker College. A devoted wife, a Christian mother, and a loyal friend, she enjoyed antiques, genealogy, shopping, and reading. She especially enjoyed family get-togethers in the mountains and during the holiday season. She and her husband were active and involved members of the HAM radio community in Wayne County prior to declining health.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the nursing and CNA staff at National Health Care, Lexington, and TriCounty Hospice for their loving, patient, and kind care as Mrs. Calhoun battled the long term and progressive effects of vascular dementia.
Visitation will be at 1 pm at Macon Memorial Park, 3969 Mercer University Drive, Macon, Georgia, 31204. A chapel and brief graveside service will immediately follow at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested remembrances be directed to Epworth Children’s Home, Millwood Avenue, Columbia, South Carolina.
