Albert A. Irato, 84 of West Palm Beach, FL passed away peacefully on November 10, 2022, in the company of his wife, Sarah (née Deignan), with whom he shared 27 years of loving marriage. Born to Albert and Michelina Irato, Al grew up in the Bronx, New York where he learned to play basketball at Monsignor Scanlan High School and developed his life-long love for the New York Yankees. After college, he began an illustrious career in the payment world. Beginning with a stint at what is now Citibank, he moved on to American Express where he rose to Senior Vice-President and was responsible for the company’s world-wide transaction authorization system. He next moved to Phoenix Arizona to become President and CEO of Hypercom, a leading provider of electronic payment solutions, where he presided over its initial public offering in 1997. A former Chairman of the Electronic Funds Transfer Association, in 2001 Al was the recipient of a lifetime Achievement Award where it was noted that his contributions to the payment industry were many and legendary. Eventually, after becoming the Vice-Chairman of Hypercom, Al moved to West Palm Beach where he retired and had more time to spend refining his treasured “Iratocisms.” These were a well-honed collection of Al’s often outrageous, and always humorous advice, liberally dispensed to family, friends and colleagues. In addition to his devoted wife, Al leaves behind his loving daughter, Capucine Hoybach and her three children, Michelina, Valen, and Mosher, each of whom brought him endless joy. He also leaves his cherished sister, Linda Murphy, her children Gregg and Adam, Adam’s wife, Melissa and four beautiful great nieces and nephews, Charlotte, Sienna, Evan and Miles. In addition, Al leaves his favorite cousins, always a source of laughter and comfort, Maria and Anthony Russo, Corinne Simari, Victor Hoosac, and his spouse, Wayne Mengel. Al is survived by his hot dogs, Bailey and Daisy who snuggled with him continuously, and always made him smile.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday November 18th, 2022 at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Marblehead, MA. Burial will be private.
