A Good Man –
Father, Son, Brother, Friend – Everyone who engaged in a conversation with Art Pearce discovered in him the best way to graciously navigate this world. Art had a sincere inquisitiveness; an intellectual vigor and pure and open-hearted wonder. Art ended his "journey" with cancer and left us like a warrior: During Sunrise on Earth Day.
Art grew up in Westfield, New Jersey, and enjoyed the summers of his youth at the home of his Great Aunts, Priscilla and Grace, in Beach Haven Park, on Long Beach Island. At Westfield High School (Class of ’85), Art was an Honors student, a tutor, and a letterman in soccer and golf. Art enjoyed playing sports, both as a kid and throughout his adult life. Art was also a graduate of Lehigh University, where he pledged the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity -- the many friendships he fostered there carried on until this past Earth Day.
In 1989, Art began his career as a CPA at Ernst and Young, in Boston, moving in with the North End “484 Crew.” In 1999, Art moved to Marblehead with former wife Jen Horan and his two beautiful daughters Jessie and Katie. Art loved Marblehead and lived there vigorously and fully until January, 2017, when he moved to Kaplan Family Hospice House. For an amazing eighteen weeks, the now famous “Room 4” at Kaplan House hosted a torrent of loved ones.
Art enjoyed a rewarding career in accounting, software development and consulting. He worked most recently as the Director of Product Development at Corporate Value Metrics, LLC. Art approached his work in the same manner with which he approached all moments of his life -- with boundless curiosity, sincerity, wit and grace. Throughout his dynamic career and fatherhood, Art, with a loving and steady hand, balanced raising his daughters, coaching soccer, traveling with family, hiking with friends and playing many rounds of golf, typically in his signature flip-flops. Art had a profound capacity for ensuring he never lost touch with those he befriended and loved.
Fatherhood was Art's most cherished charge. His pride in the character, tenacity and accomplishments of daughters, Jessie and Katie, provided his greatest joy. Katie and Jessie attribute their strength and motivation to the lessons they learned from their Dad, and “feel blessed to have been raised by such a strong hearted mentor.”
Art is survived by his beloved daughters, Jessica Lynn and Katelyn Grace; his mother, Arlene; his father, Donald; and his sister, Amanda, as well as scores of friends and colleagues, all whose lives are indelibly impacted by the power of Art's benevolent nature.
Art’s family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to all of Art’s loved ones for their inexhaustible love and support. As well, thank you to all who, throughout his life and especially during the final months of his journey, cooked, cared, visited, dined, massaged, walked, posed for photos, celebrated and loved our Art who would offer us: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” – (Dr. Seuss)
Family and Friends are welcome to celebrate Art’s life at a Memorial at 1:00 p.m., on August 13, 2017, at Crocker Park in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Arrangements under the direction of Eustis and Cornell of Marblehead.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Art’s memory with a donation to Kaplan Family Hospice House c/o Care Dimensions, 78 Liberty Street, Danvers, Massachusetts 01923.
