Born in Missoula, Montana, Gordon was the son of the late Hilbert and Myrtle (Cady) Spaberg. Gordon graduated from Polson (MT) High School and Montana State University in Bozeman, MT with a degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation, he began a long and successful career as an aerospace engineer with General Electric (GE) Aircraft Engines, first in Evendale, OH, then in Burlington, VT, and then in Lynn, MA. He obtained a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Northeastern University.
Gordon loved living in New England as it afforded him the opportunity to pursue his favorite outdoor activities within a day’s drive. He enjoyed skiing, hiking, camping, canoeing, and sailing. Memories of which he was especially fond were: winter mountaineering in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with the AMC, backcountry canoeing with the late Clarence Labelle, and sailing with boat partner (and fellow engineer) the late Ken Baxter.
He was active as a parishioner at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Marblehead for more than forty years. He served as both Junior and Senior Warden. He loved singing in the parish choir.
He also enjoyed traveling with Pat, Erica and his grandchildren. They enjoyed cruises to Alaska, the Mediterranean, the Baltic region and the Caribbean. Visits to England, Scotland and Ireland, the Outer Hebrides, Spain, Portugal, Japan, and China rounded out his travels.
In retirement, he enjoyed the Marblehead Council on Aging golf league, and also playing bocce and curling with fellow Marblehead seniors.
The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent, devoted care of the staff at the Lafayette Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility in Marblehead.
