I had Miss Culliton in the third grade at the Great Oak school in 1963. She was by far my favorite teacher. I can still remember her great smile. I know it’s been a few years since her passing but she always pops into my mind. She was a great person.    My condolences.            John Hayes

We were so sad to hear of Helens passing.  I remember her well from St  John's in Swampscott.  And  she stopped many times to talk to me in front of our house on Phillips beach when she was out on her walks.  I just watched her video, it was very touching and beautiful.

Even though we lived 1,009.8 miles apart, we shared many happy times with Captain Bill, Generalissimo Helen and Skippers Meri, Billy and T.J.   As Dr. Seuss wrote,... "Oh the Places you'll go", and, thanks to them, we did.  Like the time...  Helen and I were on Captain Jack's Ship  ( in a thunderstorm ,no less) and we had to catch Billy and my Richard when Bill and his brother, Dick, threw them to us from their small sailboat bobbing between very high waves;  OR...  When we were with Noreen and Bud winding up and down Rockport's narrow streets in their RV and then strolling around town in our new outrageous sunhats; OR...  When we made sure our hubby's mother didn't catch on to our store bought Chicken Kiev, presented as homemade;  OR...  When Helen showed me the 2nd most famous battlefield, Filene's Basement, where we risked our lives and fought the crowds over two must-have outfits;  OR...  When she took us to her Dad's cabin in N.H., and asked me, "Is he always that loud?" & I answered "Who?" not realizing she meant my 3 yr old, Michael; OR The time my Ginger made a flute from a stick with  Dr. Culliton and my Matthew ran up and down Bunker Hill with T.J.,  while both of them, years later, returned to run in the Boston Marathon.  Add to these stories, years of gratitude for the many weddings, gatherings,  laughter and conversations from Park Ridge, Illinois to Swampscott, Massachusetts.
 Helen always made my heart smile with her vivacious personality and gracious, hospitable spirit.

It is with great sorrow I read of Helen’s passing. She is the very definition of a stalwart,  a sturdy and resolute champion with a ready smile, always the ready smile. She remembered everyone’s name, always asked after each family member, seemed to always have a cheerful word to say. I hope all  your wonderful memories ease her passing from our lives. God bless.

Wendy and I had the pleasure of knowing Helen (and Bill of course) since we moved across from them in 2007.  Helen was a good friend, a good neighbor and a wonderful role model. We’ll never forget  her delightful and strong presence  as well as her keen sense of humor, and of course, her roasted potatoes. We still have a bottle of pink  champagne on ice just in case .....may her memory be a blessing to Bill and family.

We’ll always remember the good times with Helen, weather it was in Swampscott at a dinner party, or in Megansett at Dave and Rosa’s with the gang of reprobates, and at the Marblehead Yacht Club during the late day afternoon. 
    A good time was had by all. 

Dear Bill, and family,
I am so sorry to learn of Helen's passing.  I know what a vibrant presence she was in your lives, and in the community.
I hope that you are able to take comfort in knowing she is at peace with Our Lord, perhaps having found a Heavenly Beach Club and a path for daily walks with the angels.
She watches over you  still, simply from a different place.

Helen was such a wonderful person to be around.  First meeting at many Herrishoff Sailing parties and the kids staying over during long nights.  Helen always had a smile on her face and had a knack of enjoying the moment.  I will be forever be thankful for your phone call to me telling me about a friends wake which prompted me to  re-unite with my wife Roz over 24 years ago.  Thanks for being in my life and prayers for Bill and the family.

I remember the last time i was in Boston for work a few years ago.  it was a spontaneous trip so i called Uncle Bill & Aunt Helen much too late to see if i could swing up to Marblehead to see them.  i'm sure Aunt Helen had 10 different things to do that day but she dropped them and said "Come on up here Richard, we can go have lunch at the Yacht club, see the boat, and I'll take you over to Billy's house".  It seems Aunt Helen was cut from the same cloth as my Aunt Noreen she would move heaven and earth to be generous with her time and help family members re-connect.  I think this was during the move from 44 Winshaw Road up to Marblehead so this was four years ago.  I also remember cramming into a little red convertible with Aunt Helen and we drove like Dustin Hoffman to the church where Elaine was getting married we were on two wheels for most of the turns, and when we got to Billy's house Aunt Helen parked right in the middle of the street pointed the wrong way and jumped out of the car.  i asked her if she was going to move her car over to the side and i think she smiled and said "they'll go around it, Richard".  wonderful vibrant independent woman who was a great role model for friends and family and the next generation.  Georgi, Jack, Lauren, Natter and i were very sad to hear the news of Aunt Helen's passing and send out prayers to you Uncle Bill, along with Billy (darn it, he goes by Bill now i have to remember that sorry Bill...), Meredith and TJ and their families.

Bill, Billy, Merry, TJ and Richard, I am so sorry to hear about Helen's illness and passing.  She was always a joy to be around and I miss her.  Can't say anything that can make you feel better but want you to know how much she meant to me.  With sincere sympathy.

It was our good fortune to have three successful, caring children, six very special grandchildren (and five grand dogs). Helen is survived by: Meredith and Jon Davies of Marblehead, and their children Hale and Chase; Bill and Kelly Whalen of Marblehead, and their children Tess and Devin; T.J. and Jen Whalen of Charlotte, VT, and their children Campbell and Cooper.
