Joan Comfort Johnson passed away peacefully on March 24th, 2026, in her home in Marblehead, MA, surrounded by family and loved ones, shortly after celebrating her 95th birthday. Known as “Joanie” to those who loved her, she leaves behind a legacy defined by kindness, loyalty, and generosity.
Joanie truly was the heart of her family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Herbert Alden “Augie” Johnson Jr., and her parents Lowell Rutherford Comfort and Charlotte Walrath Comfort. She is survived by her brother Robert Manning Comfort (Maureen Lewis), her two daughters Barbara Johnson Fletcher (Rod) and Cynthia Johnson Rogers (Patrick); her grandchildren Whitney Fletcher Hessen (Scott), John Rogers (Natalie), Morgan Fletcher Devlin (Matt), Ashley Rogers, Taylor Fletcher, Jackson Fletcher, and one great-granddaughter. She is also survived by her niece Lesley Comfort Bigden (Jon), her nephew, David Comfort (Dana) and their children. She was a constant, supportive presence in each and every one of their lives.
Joanie was born in 1931, in her beloved New York City. She graduated from the Spence School in 1949 and Vassar College in 1953. She built a highly successful career as an assistant bridal buyer at Bonwit Teller and a bridal buyer for C Crawford Hollidge. In June 1956, she married H. Alden Johnson Jr. (Augie), the love of her life, and moved to Boston until Augie graduated from Harvard Business School in 1957, at which time they moved to Marblehead, MA.
Joanie was an active volunteer and was incredibly generous and passionate about helping others. She served as Area Chairman of the North Shore for the Junior League of Boston, Class Secretary for the Vassar Club of Boston, and Class Representative for The Spence School. She was also a Girl Scout leader, a member of the Pingree School Parents’ Committee, a Trustee of the North Shore Children’s Hospital and the Foundation Board of North Shore Medical Center, a Corporator of Citizens Scholarship of Marblehead Inc., and Director of the non-profit organization Penny Bear.
Anyone who knew Joanie would tell you that she had an innate ability to make everyone feel seen, welcomed and valued. She was a pillar in her community, as a member of Saint Andrew’s Church, the Eastern Yacht Club, the Tedesco Country Club, and the Beach Club in Massachusetts, as well as the Royal Poinciana Club and Country Club of Naples in Florida.
Joanie was a lifelong learner, often bringing together friends to explore new topics and share her passion for literature. After Augie’s passing in 1987, Joanie discovered a newfound love of painting, drawing on inspiration from the sunset skies. Over the next 30 years, she became a talented and inspiring artist, taught by local teachers in Marblehead and Naples and exhibiting her work in numerous shows. Her paintings reflected the same warmth and light she brought to those around her.
Above all, Joanie’s greatest love was her family. She was an incredibly loving and devoted mother and grandmother, never missing a graduation or sporting event and always cheering with her signature “Chum It” or “Hot Dog”. Joanie had an unwavering ability to find the silver-lining in every situation and gave love freely and unconditionally. To know Joanie – as a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt or friend – was a gift beyond measure.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, June 14th, at the Church of St. Andrew in Marblehead at 1PM, followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Joan’s memory to the Church of St. Andrew in Marblehead, MA or Salem Hospital in Salem, MA.
