MARBLEHEAD – Peter Morris Conner, a longtime resident of Marblehead, passed away peacefully on May 19th, at the Kaplan House in Danvers with his twin brother, Michael, by his side, a day after their 69th birthday.
Born in London, England, he was the beloved son of the late George, a veteran of D-Day, and Nora, born in Cavan, Ireland, (Morris) Conner. Peter was the dear brother of Michael and his wife Mary Diaz, of Wimbledon, London, Teresa Brennan and her husband, Robert of Loxwood, West Sussex, and Mary Collier of Wallingford, Oxford, England; and the cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews, all in England. He will also be missed by friends including, Glenn Bartlett, Gail Cormier, Grace Potier, Linda Bruce, Carol Potier, Dawn Edick, Roger Martin, Jeff Grinarml of Salem and many others.
Pete was a carpenter by trade, specializing in restoration and remodeling work and immigrated to the US in 1990, first to San Francisco, then work brought him to New England and to Marblehead in 1992. He was well known in the construction trade in Marblehead and he also worked at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport. Most recently he worked as a contractor for Grinarml Carpentry in Salem. At work, Pete was known, and lovingly ridiculed, for his uncompromising and very British necessity to pause his work at an appointed hour to keep his “tea time” and have a cup. Mario “Mickey” Angenica found this to be especially “funny!”
Pete was also known for his laidback lifestyle and carefree attitude and there were often affectionate references to “Pete time” except when it came to his beloved “Football” or soccer as it is named here in the US. Pete was an all-around skilled athlete, playing soccer as well as volleyball, tennis and golf. He was a hugely talented, passionate, and competitive soccer player, playing striker up until just a couple of years ago at the age of 67. He had a ferocious shot which resulted in many goals and thus, wins for his team. Pete played most recently in the New England Over-the-Hill Soccer League and back in England the competitive teams included Dulwich Hamlet, Elder FC and Ruskin FC. He was also involved in volunteer activities including teaching English to ESOL students, sitting with Dementia patients and assisting with the Vincent de Paul Society at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. His generosity knew no bounds.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated for Peter at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 28th at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 85 Atlantic Avenue, Marblehead. Arrangements are under the care of Eustis & Cornell of Marblehead, 142 Elm Street followed by refreshments at the Gerry 5 Club, 210 Beacon Street.
