Born in 1929, Steve was the youngest of three children born to Stephen and Winifred Rogers Decatur of Garden City, NY and Kittery Point, ME. He was educated at the University of Virginia where he served as a member of the Naval R.O.T.C. A proud historian and storyteller, Steve was a direct descendant of John Pine Decatur, the brother of the celebrated War of 1812 naval hero, Stephen Decatur.
In 1956, Steve married Marcia Finn and moved to Marblehead, the town he would call home for the rest of his life. He began his career in the radio broadcasting industry in Cambridge and Boston before founding his own advertising agency, Decatur Associates, in Marblehead.
Deeply involved in his community, Steve served on the Board of Trustees for the Abbot Public Library. He was also a gifted artist; several of his creations were featured in the Marblehead Festival of Arts exhibits. He was a fixture on Gregory Street for over 60 years.
Affectionately known as "Pop" to his family, he was a man of many talents and passions. He was an ace at the New York Times crossword puzzle, a lover of classical music and opera, and an avid sports fan, with a particular devotion to baseball. In his spare time, he meticulously crafted ship models from scratch and delighted in giving his family daily "history lessons".
Pop and Muffin (as Marcia was known) shared a love for the water, purchasing a Swedish sailboat named Whisper in Minnesota. Together, they cruised the Great Lakes, the waterways of Canada, and the length of the East Coast.
Steve was predeceased by his beloved wife, Muffin and his son, James Rogers Decatur. He is survived by:
● His children: Stephen Decatur Jr. (Carolyn) of Marblehead; Mary "Molly" Precopio (John) of Wakefield, RI; and Thomas Macy Decatur (Rhoda) of Shrewsbury, MA.
● His daughter-in-law: Rebecca Decatur of Swampscott, MA.
● His legacy: 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
