

William H. Mann, 89, of Lee, NH, formerly of Marblehead, MA passed peacefully Sunday, March 14, 2010 at Naples Community Hospital in Florida with his children by his side. Born in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Dr. Henry L. Mann and Pauline G. (Whitesell) Mann.
He graduated from the Scarborough School in Scarborough, NY, class of 1938 and received a B.A. from Brown University in 1942. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant. During World War II he served as Gunnery Officer aboard Destroyers USS Biddle and USS Stribling, seeing action in the European theater.
After the war, he worked at Chase Brass Company in Waterbury, CT. While there, he belonged to the Highfield Country Club, and was active in amateur theatre groups performing mainly in Gilbert and Sullivan light operas. Bill settled in Marblehead, MA and worked at Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, a division of MIT, in Cambridge, MA as a Technical Writer and Editor. He belonged to the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead, and moored his boat, the Hornpipe, in the harbor there. During that time, he met and married his wife, the late Faye E. (Megquier) Mann of Bar Harbor, ME. He enjoyed a long retirement spending summers in Lee, NH with his daughter, and winters playing golf in Naples, FL where he achieved three holes in one.
He is survived by his daughter Caroline Mann of Lee, NH; his son William F. Mann and his wife Catherine (Canniffe) Mann of Marblehead, MA; his brother Henry L. Mann and his wife Susan (Corning) Mann of Shrewsbury, MA; granddaughters Grace and Julia Mann of Marblehead, MA; and many nieces and nephews. Bill was a kind and cheerful man who will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
A funeral service will be held at the Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead on Friday, March 26 at 12PM, followed by a graveside service with military honors at Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visitation will begin at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the form of your choice.
