Martha Rose Hughes, 98, formerly of Marengo passed away September 5, 2022.
Martha is one of the five founders of Countryside Center for the Handicapped in Palatine. She loved her church and volunteered at many activities, including church bake and craft sales, a food pantry and all of her daughter Leslie’s group homes. She taught people the joy of life, had a contagious sense of humor and was always consistent with her positivity and wisdom. Nothing brought much more joy to Martha than crispy McDonald’s fries and watching the kids play. She was a lifelong walker and stayed active well into her 90s. She was the much loved and respected matriarch of a large family.
Martha is survived by her sister, Grace (99), her sons, Stan (Carol) and Aaron (Julie), her goddaughter, Gail, 7 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stan, brother Victor, daughter Helena at birth, daughter Leslie and son Steve.
There will be a visitation from 9:30am to 10:30am on Thursday, September 22 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 485 W. Woodstock St., Crystal Lake. The service will follow at 10:30am.
Interment will be in Shattucks Grove Cemetery, Belvidere.
Martha’s wishes were that any memorials be made to the Pioneer Center (Leslie’s workshop) in McHenry or St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.
