Richard “Dick” Hammond, 89, of Coconut Creek, Florida, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. His life was marked by devotion—to his family, to his work, and to the countless people whose lives he touched through compassion and service.
Dick shared 68 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Barbara “Barb” Hammond. Together they built a strong and loving family, raising five children: Mathew (Sabina) Hammond, Michelle (Joe) Disabato, Marty (Jamie) Hammond, and the late William Leander and Melissa Dunlap, who both preceded their father in death. Dick was also blessed with dozens of grandchildren, each of whom brought him joy and carried forward his spirit of generosity and kindness.
Humanitarian Work Rooted in Four Decades of Service
More than four decades ago, Dick and Barb began what would become the defining mission of their lives: serving the people of Haiti. Their early trips revealed a profound need for accessible medical care in underserved communities, and from that calling they founded Friends of the Children of Haiti (FOTCOH). Through determination, faith, and the support of countless volunteers, Dick helped establish the FOTCOH medical clinic near Jacmel, Haiti, which opened in 2000 and has since provided life‑saving care to tens of thousands of patients.
Dick’s leadership and unwavering commitment made FOTCOH a beacon of hope. He continued to support medical teams, advocate for the organization, and nurture relationships in Haiti well into his later years. His work changed lives, strengthened communities, and inspired generations of volunteers who carry his mission forward.
A Career Built on Integrity
Before dedicating himself fully to humanitarian work, Dick was co‑owner of the family business, George J. Rothan and Company, where he built a reputation for integrity, reliability, and hard work. His business career provided the foundation that later allowed him to pursue his passion for service on a global scale.
A Legacy of Love and Purpose
To his family, Dick was a steady and loving presence—wise, patient, and deeply proud of the family he and Barb built together. To his friends, he was loyal and generous. To the people of Haiti, he was a symbol of hope and compassion. And to all who knew him, he was a reminder that one person’s kindness can ripple outward to touch countless lives.
