

Charles William “Scrappy” Edwards, 100, of Marietta, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. Scrappy was born in Blue Ridge, GA, and moved to Marietta at the age of one, where he lived most of his life. Charles served in the Navy in the Pacific Area during WWII as a gunner’s mate on the USS Osmus DE701. He was a U.S. civil service employee and retired from the Department of the Army Recruiting Services. He enjoyed sports and was the captain of the Marietta Blue Devils football team in 1942, while also playing third base for the baseball team. An avid outdoorsman, he traveled to every state to view the most beautiful parts of the country. He is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Fannie Moore Edwards; his first wife of 34 years, June Duncan Edwards; two infant daughters who both passed away at childbirth; his second wife of 32 years, Gloria Houston Spence Edwards; stepsons, Robert and Michael Spence; brothers, Frank, Floyd, Fred, Claude, James, and Gordon “Jack”; sisters, Ruth Edwards Queen and Mary Edwards Moon; and grandchild, Jill Fernandez. Scrappy is survived by his son, William Lee Edwards and wife, Gwen Edwards; stepdaughter, Judy Spence; grandchildren, Charles Blake Edwards (Martha) and James Devon Edwards (Amber); and many great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. A visitation will be held at Mayes Ward Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. A graveside service will be held immediately after the visitation at Kennesaw Memorial Park.
Family and friends are welcome to join the processional line to travel to the cemetery together. Rev. Brandon Owen from First Baptist Church of Marietta will officiate the graveside service.
