He was born in Dalton, Georgia in 1941 to Thomas Lee Gillilan and Mary Katherine Souther Gillilan. In kindergarten bible school, he first met Barbara Allmon, who he would later be married to for over 60 years. He graduated from Southern Polytechnic University with a degree in industrial engineering. After working a few years in textile manufacturing, he declared that he would never again work for anyone but himself, and owned his own business for over forty years, beginning with a retail clothing store which evolved into a successful apparel and ad specialty business.
A devoted Christian, Jack served as a deacon and elder with Covenant Presbyterian Church in Marietta. More recently, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marietta.
Jack was a lifelong learner, history lover, and voracious reader. He appreciated all genres of music; in fact, one of his last acts during his final days was “conducting” while listening to one of his favorite piano classics. He loved animals – especially dogs.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Mary Katherine Gillilan; his sister, Wanda Sue Gillilan; and his brother, Bill Gillilan.
Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Allmon Gillilan; daughters, Dana Carole Gillilan, of Marietta, and Jennifer Lynne Gillilan and husband Timothy Michael Traylor of Smyrna; nieces and cousins; and precious dog, Mickey.
