Lucy Hughett Duncan, 91, of Jasper, Georgia, passed peacefully at her home on September 24, 2025. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Joseph J. Duncan, and her daughter, Susan Duncan Murphy. She is survived by her son, Larry (Katie) Duncan of Talking Rock, Georgia; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Born on July 27, 1934 in Robbins, Tennessee to parents Horace and Gladys Hughett, Lucy graduated from Robbins High School and completed a semester of college at Berea College in Kentucky before marrying her sweetheart, Joe, on June 5, 1953. They settled in Marietta, Georgia and she later graduated from Kennesaw Junior College, where she majored in accounting, but devoted her time and energy to raising her two children. As a family, some of their most memorable times were spent boating and skiing on Lake Lanier. After retirement, she and Joe spent their later years traveling the country in their motorhome.
Lucy had a strength and faith in God that carried her through both good times and bad. She showed kindness to others and had a way of making anyone she met feel welcome and loved. In return, she had a wide circle of friends who loved her as family. She also cherished her little dog, Shadow, who was her faithful companion for 10 years, and who passed only a few weeks ahead of her. Hummingbirds were also very special to her and she enjoyed watching them visit the feeder on her porch. She was deeply loved by family and friends and will be missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home, 206 Holly Street, Jasper, Georgia. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 6, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, October 7, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions may be made to Angel Flight South Central at angelflightsc.org or P.O. Box 2207, Addison, Texas 75001.
