Ruby Lee Burke Griffin, 93, of Marietta passed away January 28, 2014. Ruby gave of herself to everyone she encountered. Her warm, mischievous spirit will be sorely missed by all those who loved her. She had a deep and abiding relationship with God and was confident of His promises.
Born December 22, 1920, in Walker County, Georgia, Ruby was the youngest child of John Franklin Burke and Martha Elizabeth Strange Burke. Ruby was a notorious prankster on her father’s farm near Chickamauga. After high school, she moved to Birmingham where she met Fred Finis Griffin, Jr. – it was
love at first sight. They married on June 29, 1941.
In 1954, they moved to Atlanta with their daughter Dianne. Ruby was like a second mother to her grandson Ryan, who called her Muv. Ruby taught Sunday school at Beecher Hills Baptist Church and was a popular Girl Scout leader. A talented seamstress, Ruby designed dresses for her daughter and costumes for her grandson; she also crafted fine rugs with hand-dyed wool and loved to work in her flower garden.
After her husband’s passing in 1993, Ruby lived independently until age 89. She outlived five sisters and one brother who lived to adulthood.
She is survived by her daughter Dianne Griffin Hunter of Marietta, her grandson Ryan Griffin Hunter and his wife Melanie of Oakland, California, her sister-in-law Miriam Lowery of Birmingham, Alabama, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Monday, February 3 at 2:00 pm at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta, (770) 424-4924. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, 955 Johnson Ferry Rd., Marietta, Georgia 30068. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until service time on Monday.
