Elizabeth Shreves Muir

MUIR, Elizabeth “Betty” Louise, 98 of Martinsville, Virginia passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024. Beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Howard, her parents Otho and Helen Shreves, her sister, Anne Lande and her brother, William Shreves. Betty was born on November 12, 1925, and raised in Mappsville on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. After graduating high school, she moved to Newport News, Virginia where she worked in tabulation and payroll at the shipyard through the war years. She then met her beloved husband, Howard, and they wed in January 1953 and moved to Martinsville, Virginia to start their married life and family. She worked at Dupont until her first son was born and she became a full-time homemaker. She loved cooking, entertaining, vacations and travel with her family and friends, and she especially loved the beach. She deeply appreciated and loved visits from her friends and church members. She was a member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church since 1953 and was involved with many committees and church activities. Betty is survived by her loving sons, Ward (Melissa) and Bill (Shea), her five grandchildren, Chris (Lauren), Elizabeth, Mitchell (Christie), Sydney, and Simone, her many nieces and nephews and their families, and many special friends. The Muir family would like to thank the staff and King’s Grant Retirement Community for their incredible care, love and dedication to Betty over the past 12 years. A celebration of Betty’s life will be held in June 2024. Details to follow.
