

He was born October 7, 1922, in Rural Retreat, Virginia, to the late Ivan Greek King and the late Jettie Huddle King. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ivan King and Arnold King, and his sisters, Bonnie Fields, Ruby Groseclose, and Janet King.
He graduated from Rural Retreat High School, then served in the 226th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion with the First Army in the European Theatre during World War II. A graduate of the University of Virginia and Duke University, he taught for 30 years in the Martinsville City School System. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville and a member of The Singing Men.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Nancy B. King of the residence; his daughter, Amy K. King and her fiancé Lars Sahl, both of Durham, NC; nephews Roger King and wife, Betty, of Burlington, NC, and Larry King and wife, Linda, of Pleasant Garden, NC; great nieces, Sherrie K. Linton and Marybeth Linton of Burlington, NC, and Morgan Linton of Boone, NC.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 2, 2010, at 3:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Ron Mateer officiating. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Collins-McKee-Stone, Martinsville Chapel.
