Henry Tillman Marshall, originally of Horsepasture, Virginia, passed away at age 84 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia. He was surrounded by his loving family in his summer home in Kennebunk, Maine. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara, his two daughters Stephanie and Leia (Pie), and five grandchildren: Marshall, Caroline, Henry, Margo, and Sarah. He is also survived by his sister and good friend, Linda Marshall Reynolds.
Tillman married Barbara, the love of his life, in 1966 and they grew their family to four shortly after that. Family life was always a priority for him which meant attending many swim meets, soccer games, plays and other school activities. When the family grew to include five grandchildren, he continued to support all of their special spectator activities.
Tillman graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering, later earning his license as a Professional Engineer. He went to work for the Natural Resource Conservation Service and truly enjoyed his relationship with local farmers and helping them preserve their land with proper agricultural practices and especially helping to prevent flooding by the use of small earth dams. He was always well liked by his farmer clients because of his sense of humor and friendly manner. There were a lot of moves involved as he worked his way toward State Conservation Engineer: he started in Chase City, and then to Roanoke, Charlottesville, Richmond all in Virginia. Then on to New Hampshire and back to Richmond where he retired.
Tillman was always a hard worker whether on his father's farm growing up or on the job. Retirement was not for him, so he took a job after retirement in Greensboro, North Carolina with a start-up engineering firm. A G & E grew fast and then through focus and diligence and a merger with Schnabel Engineering the start up became an international engineering firm. He enjoyed the hard work and the sense of accomplishment it brought him.
When he wasn't working, Tillman enjoyed playing and competing at golf with his wife, Barbara, and he especially enjoyed traveling to new places with his family...exploring life in this country and some trips abroad as well.
Tillman will be remembered by all who knew him for his sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye as well as his kindness and absolute honesty. He will terribly missed by all who knew him and profoundly missed by all who loved him.
