Martha Ann Lackey

She was born on November 2, 1930, in Burke’s Garden, Virginia, and graduated from Tazewell High School in 1948. Mrs. Lackey attended Radford University as a Music Major for two years before getting married in 1950, and lived in both North Carolina and Virginia. She was very active in community services connected with the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville, such as Chairperson of the Candy Stripers and participation in the Gray Ladies and the Women’s Auxiliary.

Mrs. Lackey volunteered in several capacities for the Miss Martinsville Pageant, was active in book clubs, and often played piano and organ at places such as the Veterans Hospital in Roanoke, Calvary Christian Church in Martinsville, and events at Chatmoss Country Club. She was a piano teacher for more than 20 years, opening Marnette Studios in 1968, and was active in the Piedmont Music Teachers Association.

Mrs. Lackey was preceded in death by her parents, Leland Stanford Edwards and Stellena Walker Edwards; a brother, PFC. Arnold Stanford Edwards, who lost his life in the service of his country in World War II; her first husband, Rev. Jacob H. Young, Jr., and her second husband, Dr. Robert E. Lackey.

She is survived by her son, David Stanford Young, her daughter-in-law, Betty Clarke Young, and two grandsons: Michael Stanford Young and his wife, Jennifer Sutcliffe Young; and Tyler Jarrett Young, all of Atlanta. She is also survived by three step-children, Jeanne Hillman, Bobby Lackey, and Elizabeth Lackey Johnson.

The Memorial Service is planned for Friday, July 29, at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, at 109 Broad Street, in Martinsville. The family will greet visitors at 12:00 noon, followed by the service at 1:00 pm and interment at Roselawn Cemetery immediately following.

Contributions in Mrs. Lackey’s name may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, or to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Martinsville.
