

Virginia Barnes Wood, 90, of Martinsville died Saturday, November 2nd, 2013 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Ridgeway, Virginia on September 5, 1923, to the late William Carlisle and Frances Ellen Knight Barnes. Virginia graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1940. She was a member of the Beta Club and the Girls Basketball team.
She was married to Early Josiah Wood, Sr. for 65 years. He preceded her in death in 2007. In addition to her husband and parents, three sisters, Edna Farling, Pauline Pearman, and Georgia Barnes; and two brothers Philip Barnes and Murray Barnes, Sr. also preceded her in death.
Virginia is survived by one son, Early Josiah Wood, Jr. and wife, Jane and two daughters Debby W. Watlington and husband, Clay and Ellen L. Wood.
She also leaves behind five grandchildren, Laurie Watlington Manning, John Philip Wood and wife Brittany, Ryan Clay Watlington and wife Shannon, David Josiah Wood, and Emily Jane Wood. She also had five great-grand children – Sarah Brooke Shelton, Virginia Lee Manning, William David Manning, Jr. Jessica Ellen Manning and Tatum James Wood.
She was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church for sixty-six years, serving in the Cora Lee Bible Class and United Methodist Women.
During her lifetime she was an avid reader and an active bowler and golfer. She was on a bowling league and a member of the Grasshoppers Golf Club for many years.
The funeral service will be at 1:00pm on Tuesday, November 5th at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church on Starling Avenue, Martinsville with Reverend Steven Greer officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Burial Park.
Family will receive friends Monday, November 4th at McKee Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville from 6-8pm or other times at the home of Debby and Clay Watlington, 1530 Mulberry Road Martinsville.
