
Dr. Behmer was born in Cleveland, attended Cathedral Latin High School, and then went on to become a Holy Cross Brother for 10 years. He returned to Cleveland to teach at Grand River Academy in Ashtabula County and Western Reserve University, where he earned his PhD.
Dr. Behmer taught as a professor at Wayne State University for 20 years before returning to Cleveland to reside at Judson Manor.
Dr. Behmer was a world traveler and educator, specializing in English as a second language with a focus on China and East Asia. In Communist China, college students flocked to his class titled, "Why I Am a Christian."
Dr. Behmer started the ITM Corporation, a printing, publishing, and travel company. He authored several books, including "The Behmer Language Symbols,"and an international magazine, "The Foreign Language Teacher," published in German, French, Spanish, and English .
He is survived by his sister, Maryjane Shelby, who resides in Nokomis, Florida, his brother, Edward Behmer, who resides in Huntsville, Alabama, and nieces and nephews in the Cleveland area, as well as Alabama, California, and Colorado. Memorials may be made to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.
